Liverpool are on the verge of completing one of the biggest transfers of the summer, with Bayer Leverkusen superstar Florian Wirtz set to join the Reds in a deal worth more than €142m (£120m).

Only minor structural details remain before the marquee German playmaker signing under Arne Slott. Personal terms were fully agreed in May on a five-year deal worth €20-22m per year, which secures Wirtz until 2030 and places him among Liverpool’s highest-paid players behind Mohamed Salah.

According to renowned transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, the deal is in the final stages, with both clubs working to finalise the remaining details. Personal terms between Wirtz and Liverpool have already been fully agreed, signaling a major coup for the Premier League giants.

Liverpool’s preference for the 22-year-old has stunned Bayern Munich, who offered a high salary (€24m/year) and have historically dominated the Bundesliga’s talent acquisition.

Wirtz’s rejection underlines the appeal of Slott’s project. He has already looked for homes in northwest England and could have a medical scheduled for early next week while on a break from Germany’s national team duties.

The deal would break Liverpool’s transfer record (previously £85m for Darwin Nunez) and challenge Chelsea’s Premier League record (£115m for Moises Caicedo).

The attacking midfielder is one of the best performers in European football, having played a key role in Bayer Leverkusen’s remarkable 2024/25 season. (57 goals, 65 assists in 197 Leverkusen games), and No.10 and wide playmaker are a perfect match for Slott’s dynamic system.

This follows the £29.5m signing of Wirtz’s Leverkusen teammate Jeremy Frimpong, which signals a target squad development. The reported €142m+ package would make Wirtz one of the most expensive signings in Liverpool’s history, and potentially the Premier League as well.

Wirtz’s arrival would mark a statement of intent from new manager Arne Slott, who is looking to rebuild and refresh Liverpool’s squad following the departure of Jurgen Klopp.

Fans of the Merseyside club will be thrilled at the prospect of seeing Wirtz linked up with the likes of Mohamed Salah, Darwin Nunez and Dominik Szobosz.

With only the final paperwork and formalities remaining, an announcement could be made official in the coming days. If confirmed, this blockbuster transfer would provide a huge boost as Liverpool aim to challenge for domestic and European honours in the coming seasons.
