FIFA has announced a List of The Best FIFA Awards 2024 nominees, including 17-year-old Barcelona gems Lemine Yamal and Argentina captain Lionel Messi, who has won the FIFA World Player of the Year award six times. Messi is the only player to be nominated outside of a European league.
The award is given to the world’s best footballer each year. Five-time FIFA World Player of the Year winner Cristiano Ronaldo was not included in the 2024 list.
From 1991 to 2009, the award was previously known as the FIFA World Player of the Year. It was merged into the FIFA Ballon d’Or from 2010 to 2015, a collaboration between FIFA and France Football.
After the two organizations separated in 2016, FIFA introduced The Best FIFA Football Awards, which continue to this day.
List of The Best FIFA Awards 2024 nominees
The nominees for The Best FIFA Awards 2024, are Real Madrid’s Kylian Mbappe (France), Jude Bellingham (England), Daniel Carvajal (Spain), Federico Valverde (Uruguay), and Vinicius Junior (Brazil).
Manchester City’s Erling Haaland (Norway) and Rodrygo Hernandez (Spain), Bayer Leverkusen’s Florian Wirz (Germany), Barcelona’s new star Lemin Yamal (Spain) and retired Real playmaker Toni Kroos (Germany) are also nominated in their respective categories.
In the nomination list for other categories, World Cup 2022 champion Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni and goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez have also been nominated in their respective categories.
Scaloni is up against Real Madrid’s Carlo Ancelotti, Euro Cup winner Luis de la Fuente of Spain, Premier League winner Pep Guardiola of Manchester City and Bundesliga champion Bayer Leverkusen’s Xabi Alonso in the Best Coach nominations.
FIFA has also announced the nominees for the best women’s footballer, goalkeeper and coach for the ninth edition of the award.
