Man United European unbeaten run in Danger as Lyon Await them in an explosive quarter-final

Manchester United’s quest to salvage a troubled campaign continues this week as they prepare for a critical Europa League quarter-final first leg against an in-form Lyon side at the Groupama Stadium.

With their domestic season unraveling—currently flirting from 13th position in the Premier League table —United have redirected their ambitions towards European success. The Europa League now serves as their last realistic shot at silverware and redemption.

Encouragingly, the Red Devils are the only side left in the tournament without a single defeat, winning six and drawing four in their ten outings. However, standing in their way is a confident Lyon team riding a powerful wave of form.

Lyon come into this contest with eight wins in their last ten matches in all competitions. Their recent 7-1 aggregate demolition of FCSB in the last round showcased their attacking brilliance and renewed belief under manager Paulo Fonseca.

Although their build-up was dampened by a serious injury to winger Ernest Nuamah—sidelined for the rest of the season with an ACL tear—they remain a potent threat. Malick Fofana also misses out, while Duje Caleta-Car remains a doubt. Veteran midfielder Nemanja Matic is expected to feature against his former club according to Livescore.com

The French side have also lost just twice in their last 16 home games, turning the Groupama Stadium into a fortress United must breach.

Manchester United boss Reuben Amorin is dealing with a raft of injury concerns ahead of the trip to France. Lisandro Martínez, Amad Diallo, Ayden Heaven, and Jonny Evans are all confirmed absentees. Matthijs de Ligt and promising midfielder Kobbie Mainoo are being assessed ahead of kick-off.

Although Luke Shaw has returned to training, he may not be rushed back, with Patrick Dorgu likely to retain his place at left-back.

Despite the setbacks, United will take encouragement from their Europa League track record and their strong head-to-head history with Lyon. In four previous European encounters, the Red Devils have claimed two wins and two draws—remaining unbeaten.

United must now find their spark in Europe to avoid finishing the season empty-handed. Lyon, in superb form and backed by a passionate home crowd, won’t make it easy. But with both clubs fighting for pride and progress, Thursday’s showdown promises fireworks.
