AC Milan’s European Dream Hanging by a Thread as Genoa Test Looms

AC Milan find themselves in unfamiliar territory as the 2024/25 Serie A season nears its end — fighting for a European spot rather than a league title. Once contenders in last season’s title race, the Rossoneri are now languishing in 9th place with just 54 points and only 4 matches left to turn their campaign around.

Currently, Milan trail the final European qualification spot by 6 points, while the Champions League places remain 8 points out of reach — a gap that seems increasingly insurmountable with time ticking away.

Next up for Stefano Pioli’s side is an away fixture against 13th-placed Genoa, who are safely mid-table with 39 points but still capable of springing surprises. Milan’s recent form — 2 wins, 2 draws, and a single loss in their last 5 league outings — hasn’t quite sparked a resurgence. However, compared to Genoa’s inconsistent run of 3 losses, q draw, and 1 win in the same period, Milan might still fancy their chances.

Despite their early Champions League exit at the hands of Dutch side Feyenoord in the knockout stages, Milan’s season hasn’t been entirely bleak. The red half of the San Siro lifted the Italian Super Cup after defeating arch-rivals Inter Milan, and they are also set to battle Bologna in the Coppa Italia final after eliminating Inter again in the semi-finals.

Still, the climb up the league table is steep. All 8 sides above Milan are in better domestic form, with the exception of Inter and Atalanta — both of whom are entrenched in 2nd and 3rd place respectively, far beyond Milan’s reach. This reality means the Rossoneri’s chances of making a last-gasp leap into Europe are slim at best.

History, however, does offer a glimmer of hope. In their last 10 meetings with Genoa across all competitions, AC Milan have been dominant — recording 6 wins, 3 draws, and just 1 loss.

Milan will need to channel that dominance and muster every ounce of grit and firepower they can find if they are to rescue a spot in Europe and salvage pride from what’s been a turbulent league campaign.
