Manchester City Eye Strong Start to Club World Cup Against Wydad Casablanca

After an underwhelming domestic and European campaign, Manchester City head into the FIFA Club World Cup with redemption on their minds.

Pep Guardiola’s side, reigning champions of the competition after their commanding 4-0 victory over Fluminense in 2023, are expected to begin their title defence on a strong note against Moroccan giants Wydad Casablanca in Group G.

City spent over €250 million from January to the summer window, reinforcing their squad with fresh talents in hopes of reclaiming their dominance.

The likes of Rayan Cherki, Tijjani Reijnders, Rayan Aït-Nouri, Kusanov and Omar Marmoush have joined the ranks, signaling the club’s intent to return to the summit of world football.

Despite falling short in the Premier League, finishing 3rd behind Liverpool and Arsenal, and suffering an FA Cup final upset at the hands of Crystal Palace, City will be highly motivated in this newly expanded 32-team tournament.

A group stage that features Al Ain, Juventus and Wydad provides a favorable platform to find rhythm.

Wydad Casablanca, while a historic force in Moroccan football, only managed a third-place finish in the 2024/25 domestic league. However, they enter the tournament with momentum, having lost just one of their last 22 league matches.

Their inclusion stems from their CAF Champions League triumph in 2021/22, and they’ve strengthened with the arrival of veteran winger Nordin Amrabat.

City, on the other hand, are adapting to a post-Kevin De Bruyne era after the club legend’s switch to Napoli as a free agent.

With new faces across the pitch, particularly in attack, there may be an initial period of adjustment. Still, given the depth and quality in the squad, they remain heavy favorites to dispatch Wydad in their opening match.

Injured Players:
Manchester City: Mateo Kovacic, John Stones

Manchester City may be coming off a challenging season, but the Club World Cup offers a fresh stage—and they look poised to make a confident start.
